background
After leaving UCL with a degree in English Literature I went on to open my own publishing company in spite of being described by my teacher as “the kind of girl who’ll be found dead in a ditch.” When I met her years later she said it wasn’t that she hadn’t liked me, just that she didn’t want to be responsible for looking after me.
I get that. I don’t like small, rigid spaces and I didn’t like being put in one. I like freedom to move and change which is what makes me good at my job.
When I work with someone, I like to discover who they are - or who they want to be - and find a way to voice it. Everyone sees themselves differently but not everyone knows how to articulate it. That’s what I’m good at: Getting to know a person and putting them into words.
Every project is a new challenge and I love to work with people from the ground up to see what we come up with together. With any luck, the experience will also be stimulating and fun for both sides. No one wants a boring day at the office…..
Today, I specialise in ghost-writing and collaborative literature as well as comedy scriptwriting.
My first book was published by Penguin and both made the Times and Telegraph’s Top Biographies for 2022. My second was published by Harper Collins and was Observer Book of the Week.
“The material needed to be ironic, funny - and in the style of one of the greatest playwrights of all time. “
— Ian Denyer, Director
“We needed some specialised sketch material for a BBC documentary presented by a very hot talent. The brief was exacting as was the time-frame. The material needed to be ironic, funny - and in the style of one of the greatest playwrights of all time.
There was already a buzz about the ability of writer Charlotte Sones and her writing partner Georgia Mackenzie - tight, acidic dialogue freighted with irony and above all, deeply, deeply dark. It was immediately obvious they were the right fit. Within a week we took delivery of ten interpretations - no egocentric over-pushing of the brief, all of them painfully funny.
Then they came to set and performed the chosen piece. Polished, professional, profound.”
Written and performed by Charlotte Sones & Georgia Mackenzie. Directed by Ian Denyer
screenwriting
I write comedy for television and radio. My sketch ‘Buffet’ - co-written and performed with Georgia Mackenzie - was commissioned by BBC Studios for the Sky Arts Passions season and aired as part of Danny Dyer’s episode on Harold Pinter. The sketch was shortlisted for a 2019 Comedy Chort award. My script THE GOD LIFE was shortlisted by The Female Pilot Club in 2023. My speciality is sitcom and my forte is dialogue and gag writing.
I was part of #TellHerVision 2020,
THE ERA 50:50 all female Writersroom mentored by Joanna Scanlan.
ghostwriting
I am great at helping clients find their own voice and putting their personality into words. I’m professional, flexible, discreet and unfazed by egos big or small….
treatments
As a scriptwriter I have oceans of experience writing treatments which are deadly boring but a necessary part of the job. My decade heading up sales in my own company honed my ability to research and present for a particular audience. The bottom line of any business is that you have to be able to sell it - whatever the product - and a good treatment is an integral part of that process.
If you’d like to find out a bit more about what I can offer, drop me a line and we can chat about your project in more detail and see if we’re a good fit.
I’m based in London but happy to travel.
(although I don’t do coaches).
I am represented by Rory Scarfe at The Blair Partnership for my literary work.
